Finding our Zen

When you go into a grocery store, there are so many things.  So much stuff piled one on top of another.

You can’t even go in to buy peanut butter anymore, without having more options than you need.  What ever happened to the days of the little family grocery store.  JIF peanut butter, a couple types of laundry soap, 2 different scented shampoos. That’s really all the choice I need.

I’m indecisive.  I don’t want to have to choose between 300 different deodorants.  Gel, stick, spray, powder, exotic flower, fresh clean, mountain rain.

Stop with all the choices!

Did you know they that now have specially formulated bird food?  Food for low calories, high calories, mood stabilization. For birds!?

Walking down the aisles my brain is assaulted.  Yes, that’s a strong word, but that’s the way it is.  Assaulted by all the colors and shapes and sizes.  The ridiculous over-presentation of variety.

Can we just say enough is enough?  Can we, as a population, agree on anything?

It’s no wonder we can’t get our children to listen, or commit to our marriages, or have any moral code.  Our lives are not restrained by any normalcy anymore.  Anything we like is ours to have, for the right price.  Sure, they’d make money selling plain peanut butter, but what about the folks who like it smooth?  What about the people who like it extra crunchy, low sodium, high fiber, CHOCOLATE FLAVORED!?  Why should they have to suffer through eating anything that is not exactly the way they want it?

We don’t have to suffer through anything we don’t like, so when the smallest thing goes wrong we don’t know that to do.

What I wouldn’t give to stop at a little drive through store where I could say… I want bread, milk, eggs, a couple rolls of toilet paper…

…and don’t forget the peanut butter.

That would be my zen.
